I'd forgotten all about this, but since Ubuntu 10.04, everything has been fine. I use skype without any issues - in fact since 10, my (obsolete) LifeDrive is even automatically mounted - Linux just keeps getting better! (ICH8 still isn't listed as supported, but it sure seems fine now).

I just tried turning up the volume of my capture settings and it seems fine now. Could it be that easy?

I have the identical problem with my Dell 1525. This has been frustrating trying to diagnose, so I am thankful that Paul has provided his research. I would so like to abandon Vista forever!

That could be an option - I'm hoping I can just update ALSA somehow though... but I don't want to waste too much more time.
